Diamond GuideCutThe cut of a diamond is an important factor in determining the quality of the stone. The proportions of the stone are meant to maximize its’ ability to reflect light. Ideal Proportions allow the 58 facets to mirror the light entering the stone, maximizing a diamonds’ brilliance, fire and stunning beauty.
ColourMost diamonds, although appearing colourless, actually have a slight yellow tint. The intensity of these tints affect the rarity and value of a diamond. The amount of colour in a diamond is described on an alphabetical scale ( D-Z) or a numerical scale (0-10). The colour is not visible to the naked eye until it reaches J-L (3-4) on the colour scale.
ClarityDiamonds are composed of carbon compressed by heat and pressure under the earth’s surface for millions of years. Natural inclusions in this process affect the clarity of a stone. A diamond which is internally flawless is the highest quality and value.
Carat WeightA diamond’s weight is measured in what is known as a ‘carat’, which is a small unit of measurement equal to 200 milligrams. Carat is not a measure of a diamond’s size, since cutting a diamond to different proportions can affect its weight. It is rare to find larger fine quality diamonds than smaller diamonds therefore the price of a diamond rises exponentionaly to its size. |
